I am a blogger and even my articles which are mere of 1000 words may contain many mistakes. These are edited by our team at various levels. So it is fair enough to say that a book of 1000 pages, that is expected to become a best-seller. Even the finest authors make a mistake in their first draft of the manuscript. Thus, arises the need to hire editor for book. Editors are critical for making your writing “tight” and “immersive”, by which I mean “crisp” and “solid”. If you don’t get it yet, editors are required to make your book- a ‘blockbuster’.
Of course, you’ll also want to ensure that your submission is free of typos and errors in grammar or punctuation.
Editors are artists that understand the industry, your genre, your ideas and what publishers and readers are looking for, and they can tell you whether you meet this criterion or not—and importantly, how to do it, if your book is lacking in these fields. Usually, editors are experienced professionals from the writing industry. They have mastered themselves with grammar and sentence structure, vocabulary and phrase/idiom knowledge.
After having said this, I also think there’s so much more to your manuscript editing than grammar and misspellings. I look at elements such as story arc, flow, and pacing. There’s your book description, front matter, back matter and back cover text, as well. Some books need development editing, while others only need copy editing (proofing).
WHY NEED ARISES AFTER ALL
While you want your book to be published by the finest publishers, you yourself are expected to present a world-class manuscript with the finest ideas. Whole expecting this, no one would probably even consider a writeup full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.
It’s very important for your book to be almost ready to run and print. if that is not the case it will normally lead to publishers running away from your piece of hard-work.
You can either pick and hire a good book editor yourself or you could gamble the publisher responsible to find you one and edit your book in the publication process itself.
Professional editors are well-aware of the journal requirements and are in a better position to ensure that the manuscript is valid, relevant and makes sense.
TYPES OF PROFESSIONALLY EDITING A BOOK MANUSCRIPT
Also knows as style editing. The most basic form of style editing which involves rearranging some of the copy so it flows better. Hence, is easily understood by the reader. The best part about this is that it retains the basic structure of the manuscript; as it basically is just some reworking of the wordage to make it more gay, spicy and proactive
This is commonly known as proofreading. The editor, in this case, goes over a manuscript line by line and edits for any grammatical errors that follow. It doesn’t entail any excessive rewriting, however, makes use of some color editing. It is actually just a basic checkup of grammar and spelling errors
‘Give life to words’ editing
I would call this an upgraded form of color editing. It may involve minor to major edits by rewriting some words/phrases/sentences to bring emotions into lifeless words. The basic idea of this type of editing is to transport the reader into the scene that is being mentioned.
Unlike the others, this might involve some major editing like scene deletion, a reworking of characters to include few major and minor characteristics. It can be called “extensive” writing because of the huge amounts of changes made depending upon the manuscript. It phases into the next step that I call DEVELOPMENT EDITING.
Many times if manuscripts are not developmentally edited, readers come across lifeless and undeveloped plots. So basically, here, the editor deeply plows into the book and develops most of its information further.
It is the most expensive form of editing because the editor adds new traits to characters, adds entirely new characters, scenes and plot lines.
WHY SELF EDITING IS NOT RECOMMENDED
After all this, few authors yet go for ‘self-editing’. It is possible to self-edit (I didn’t mean that you aren’t capable, but isn’t recommended). Writers are biased when it comes to our own manuscripts. It’s why surgeons don’t operate on themselves. An extra pair of collaborative eyes help your book be all it can be. As writers are also human, they sometimes may miss the tiniest errors. Therefore, if the manuscript is reviewed and proofread by any professional editor it always enhances the content.
